Description

This Easy Sticky Crispy Chilli Beef is a delicious and quick dish with tender beef, crispy coating, and a sweet, tangy, and spicy sauce. Ready in just 30 minutes, it’s perfect for a busy weeknight or as a ‘fakeaway’ meal.

Ingredients

500 g (1 lb) sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain

100 g (½ cup) cornstarch

2 teaspoons baking powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon oil for frying

For the Sauce:

2 tablespoons dark soy sauce

6 tablespoons ketchup

4 tablespoons cider or white vinegar

5 tablespoons honey

2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated

3 cloves garlic, minced

½ red chili pepper, finely minced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Slice the sirloin thinly against the grain. In a bowl, combine cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Toss the beef strips in the mixture until well-coated.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat a non-stick skillet over high heat and add oil. Once hot, place the beef strips in the skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd. Brown on one side for about 1-2 minutes. Stir and cook for another 2-3 minutes until crispy and browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: In a separate bowl, combine soy sauce, ketchup, vinegar, honey, ginger, garlic, and red chili pepper. Stir well.
  4. Cook the Sauce: Pour the sauce into the skillet and bring to a boil. Stir frequently for 30 seconds to 1 minute until it thickens.
  5. Combine and Serve: Return the crispy beef to the skillet and toss in the sauce. Serve over rice or noodles with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, add more red chili pepper or chili flakes.
  • Feel free to swap the beef for chicken, or use tofu for a vegetarian version.
  • For gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari.
  • Adjust the sweetness by reducing the honey or ketchup in the sauce.
