This dish is perfect for a satisfying dinner that combines the rich flavors of beef and cheese with tender potatoes.
Ingredients
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cups thinly sliced potatoes
Cheese
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- ½ cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
Sauce and Seasonings
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz)
- ½ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking the casserole.
- Cook Ground Beef and Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
- Season Meat: Add garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to the cooked ground beef mixture. Stir well to combine all the seasonings evenly.
- Prepare Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the can of cream of mushroom soup and the milk until smooth and combined to create the creamy sauce for the casserole.
- Layer Ingredients: Grease a baking dish lightly. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer at the bottom. Spread half of the seasoned ground beef mixture over the potatoes. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses over the beef layer.
- Repeat Layers: Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, ground beef, and cheeses, creating a second layer.
- Add Sauce: Pour the prepared soup and milk mixture evenly over the top layer of the casserole to moisten all ingredients.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil or a lid. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to allow the potatoes to cook through and the flavors to meld.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to brown the cheese on top and thicken the sauce slightly.
- Rest Before Serving: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes to set, making it easier to slice and serve.
Notes
- Add frozen peas or corn to the casserole layers for extra vegetables and color.
- Use cream of chicken soup instead of mushroom soup for a lighter, slightly different flavor.
- For a thicker sauce, reduce the milk slightly or add a tablespoon of sour cream to the soup mixture.
- Make sure to slice potatoes thinly and evenly to ensure they cook fully within the baking time.
