Description

Simple sweet bread is a soft, lightly sweet, and tender homemade loaf with a golden crust. This beginner-friendly recipe is made using basic pantry ingredients and is perfect for breakfast, toast, or enjoying warm with butter and jam.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Add wet ingredients: Stir in the melted butter, egg, and salt into the yeast mixture until well combined.
  3. Incorporate flour: Gradually add the flour to the mixture, stirring continuously until a soft dough starts to form.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Shape the loaf: Punch down the risen dough to release gas bubbles and shape it into a loaf. Place the shaped dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  7. Second rise: Cover the loaf pan and let the dough rise again for 30–40 minutes, or until the dough rises just above the edges of the pan.
  8. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) while the dough is undergoing its second rise.
  9. Bake the bread: Bake the loaf for 35–40 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Cool the bread: Remove the bread from the pan and place it on a wire rack to cool completely before slicing to ensure optimal texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Brush the top of the bread with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
  • For extra flavor, add cinnamon or vanilla to the dough.
  • The bread slices best once it has fully cooled.
  • Store the bread at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze it for longer storage.
