Description

A festive and visually charming pumpkin-shaped bread perfect for fall gatherings or holiday tables. This easy-to-make bread uses simple ingredients and kitchen twine shaping to create a pumpkin appearance, making it a delightful centerpiece as well as a tasty treat.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Other

  • Kitchen twine for shaping
  • Optional: cinnamon stick for stem

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Slowly pour in the warm water and add the olive oil. Stir everything together until a dough starts to form.
  2. Knead and Rise: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Dough: Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a large ball. Wrap kitchen twine loosely around the dough multiple times to create nine sections, mimicking the look of a pumpkin. Tie the twine at the bottom securely to keep the shape.
  4. Optional Decoration: Insert a cinnamon stick upright into the center of the dough ball to serve as the pumpkin stem for added aroma and aesthetics.
  5. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the shaped dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 25–30 minutes until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven, carefully cut the twine, and let the bread cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor and aroma, insert a cinnamon stick in the center to mimic a pumpkin stem.
  • This recipe can be adapted by using whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose for a healthier option.
  • Make sure not to tie the twine too tightly or it may cut into the dough during rising and baking.
