Description

Garlic Parmesan Focaccia Bread is a soft, airy bread with a golden crispy crust, topped with a savory mix of garlic, Parmesan, and rosemary. It’s the perfect complement to any meal, easy to make, and sure to impress.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons vegetable shortening or lard

3/4 cup warm water

Oil for frying

Honey or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
  2. Make the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and ¼ cup olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until the dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the Dough Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the Oven: While the dough rises, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Shape the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a greased baking sheet. Press it out into a ½-inch thick rectangle.
  7. Add Toppings: Mix the minced garlic with a tablespoon of olive oil. Brush this garlic oil over the dough and sprinkle with grated Parmesan, rosemary, and coarse sea salt.
  8. Create Dimples: Using your fingers, press down into the dough to create dimples, which adds texture and allows the toppings to adhere.
  9. Final Rest: Let the dough rest for 20 minutes while the oven finishes preheating.
  10. Bake the Focaccia: Bake the focaccia in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Drizzle with olive oil before serving.

Notes

  • For extra spice, add red pepper flakes to the garlic oil.
  • Add sun-dried tomatoes or olives for more flavor.
  • For a gluten-free version, swap the flour for a gluten-free all-purpose blend.
  • To make it even cheesier, add mozzarella on top before baking.
