Description
A rich and flavorful minced meat sauce that’s easy to prepare and perfect for pairing with pasta, rice, or casseroles. This hearty sauce combines ground beef, aromatic onions and garlic, and a blend of tomato-based ingredients with Italian seasonings to deliver a classic, comforting dish ideal for weeknight dinners or meal prepping.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (or mixed beef & pork)
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
Optional Ingredients
- Red pepper flakes, to taste
- Fresh basil, chopped
- A splash of red wine (for deeper flavor)
Instructions
- Brown the Meat: In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook it until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Once fully cooked, drain any excess fat to keep the sauce from becoming greasy.
- Sauté Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the browned meat. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
- Add Tomato Base and Seasonings: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Simmer the Sauce: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and help the flavors meld together.
- Adjust and Serve: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary—add optional red pepper flakes or fresh basil if desired. Serve the sauce hot over cooked pasta, rice, or your preferred base.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a splash of red wine during the simmering stage.
- This sauce freezes well and can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
- Use mixed beef and pork for a slightly different texture and flavor.
