Description
Homemade Cornbread with Maple Butter Topping is a soft, moist, and perfectly balanced sweet and savory bread. This classic American side pairs wonderfully with chili, soups, or holiday meals and is topped with a rich, creamy maple butter that adds a deliciously sweet finish.
Ingredients
For the Cornbread
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ cup melted butter or vegetable oil
For the Maple Butter Topping
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the yellow cornmeal, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and melted butter or vegetable oil until smooth.
- Combine wet and dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir just until combined. Avoid overmixing to maintain a tender cornbread texture.
- Pour batter & bake: Transfer the batter into the prepared baking dish. Smooth the top with a spatula and bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Prepare maple butter: While the cornbread is baking, combine the softened unsalted butter and pure maple syrup in a bowl. Mix until smooth and creamy.
- Serve: Once baked, serve the warm cornbread topped with the maple butter for a rich and flavorful finish.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter to keep the cornbread tender and light.
- Adjust the amount of sugar to make the cornbread more savory or sweeter according to your taste.
- Maple butter can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
