Description
Soft and hearty honey oat bread with a lightly sweet flavor and tender crumb. Made with oats and honey, this wholesome loaf is perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying warm with butter.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, honey, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Add Butter and Salt: Stir in the melted unsalted butter and salt into the yeast mixture to combine the flavors and enrich the dough.
- Mix Dough: Add rolled oats and all-purpose flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms, ensuring all flour is incorporated.
- Knead Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, developing gluten for structure.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape and Pan: Punch down the risen dough to release air, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan, preparing it for the second rise.
- Second Rise: Cover the pan and let the dough rise again for 30–45 minutes until it puffs up noticeably.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking.
- Bake: Bake the loaf for 35–40 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped, indicating it is fully baked.
- Cool: Remove the bread from the loaf pan and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing to finish setting the crumb.
Notes
- Brush the top with honey butter after baking for extra flavor and a shiny finish.
- For added texture and visual appeal, sprinkle oats on top of the loaf before baking.
- Store the bread at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze to extend shelf life.
