Description

Potato Cheese Sticks are a crispy, golden, and gooey snack made from tender potato sticks stuffed with melted mozzarella cheese. They are perfect for any occasion and can be fried, baked, or air-fried for a delicious treat.

Ingredients

3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into sticks

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

Vegetable oil for frying

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and cut potato sticks in a pot of water with a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook for 5–7 minutes until the potatoes are slightly tender but still firm. Drain and allow them to cool completely.
  2. Set up a breading station with three separate bowls: flour, beaten eggs, and a mixture of breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Coat each potato stick in flour, shaking off the excess, then dip it in the beaten eggs, followed by the breadcrumb mixture. Press gently to adhere the breadcrumbs. Repeat for all sticks.
  4. Create a small slit along the side of each stick and stuff with about 1 tablespoon of shredded mozzarella. Seal the edges gently to keep the cheese inside.
  5. Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Drop a breadcrumb into the oil to test the temperature—if it sizzles, the oil is ready. Carefully add a few sticks at a time and fry for 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the sticks from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a healthier version, try baking or air frying the sticks instead of frying them.
  • You can swap mozzarella with cheddar, pepper jack, or any cheese that melts well.
  • Feel free to add herbs like rosemary or thyme to the breadcrumb mixture for added flavor.
  • Frozen potato cheese sticks can be prepared ahead of time and fried directly from the freezer.
  • Try different dipping sauces like ketchup, ranch dressing, garlic aioli, or sriracha mayo.
