Description
Red, White, and Blueberry Lemonade is a refreshing summer drink combining sweet berries and tart lemon, creating a vibrant and flavorful beverage that’s perfect for any gathering.
Ingredients
1 cup (packed) fresh strawberry halves
½ cup (packed) fresh blueberries
1 ¼ cups white sugar, divided
6 lemons (organic preferred), or more as needed (you may need as many as 10 lemons)
5 cups water
Instructions
- Combine strawberries, blueberries, and ½ cup of sugar in a bowl. Use a potato masher to lightly crush the berries until all the blueberries have burst open.
- Use a vegetable peeler to zest the yellow part of the lemons, then add the zest to the berry-sugar mixture.
- Pour the remaining sugar into the bowl and stir thoroughly. Cover the mixture and let it sit on the counter for 2 to 6 hours, stirring occasionally. Alternatively, refrigerate overnight for maximum flavor.
- Bring 5 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan, then pour the berry mixture into the hot water. Immediately turn off the heat and let the mixture steep for 5 minutes, stirring a few times.
- Set a fine mesh strainer over a heatproof bowl, then pour the berry mixture through the strainer, pressing gently to extract the liquid. Let the liquid cool to room temperature for about 20 minutes.
- Cut the 6 zested lemons in half and squeeze their juice through a strainer to remove any seeds. Add the lemon juice to the strained berry liquid.
- Taste the lemonade and add more lemon juice if desired. Adjust sweetness by adding more sugar if necessary.
- Transfer the lemonade to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to chill.
- Once chilled, give the lemonade a final taste and adjust the flavor if needed. Serve over ice and enjoy!
