Description

Red, White, and Blueberry Lemonade is a refreshing summer drink combining sweet berries and tart lemon, creating a vibrant and flavorful beverage that’s perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

1 cup (packed) fresh strawberry halves

½ cup (packed) fresh blueberries

1 ¼ cups white sugar, divided

6 lemons (organic preferred), or more as needed (you may need as many as 10 lemons)

5 cups water

Instructions

  1. Combine strawberries, blueberries, and ½ cup of sugar in a bowl. Use a potato masher to lightly crush the berries until all the blueberries have burst open.
  2. Use a vegetable peeler to zest the yellow part of the lemons, then add the zest to the berry-sugar mixture.
  3. Pour the remaining sugar into the bowl and stir thoroughly. Cover the mixture and let it sit on the counter for 2 to 6 hours, stirring occasionally. Alternatively, refrigerate overnight for maximum flavor.
  4. Bring 5 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan, then pour the berry mixture into the hot water. Immediately turn off the heat and let the mixture steep for 5 minutes, stirring a few times.
  5. Set a fine mesh strainer over a heatproof bowl, then pour the berry mixture through the strainer, pressing gently to extract the liquid. Let the liquid cool to room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  6. Cut the 6 zested lemons in half and squeeze their juice through a strainer to remove any seeds. Add the lemon juice to the strained berry liquid.
  7. Taste the lemonade and add more lemon juice if desired. Adjust sweetness by adding more sugar if necessary.
  8. Transfer the lemonade to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to chill.
  9. Once chilled, give the lemonade a final taste and adjust the flavor if needed. Serve over ice and enjoy!

Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar or using a sugar substitute like stevia or monk fruit.
  • Frozen berries can be used for a slushy version of this lemonade.
  • For a unique twist, try adding lime or orange zest in addition to the lemon zest.
  • For a fun twist, add vodka, rum, or gin for an adult version of the lemonade.
