Description

These homemade sloppy joes are sweet, tangy, and perfectly messy! A quick 30-minute dinner that’s a family favorite and way better than the canned mix.

Ingredients

Ground Beef Mixture:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for a kick)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Serving:

  • 46 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Cook Ground Beef Mixture: In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and bell pepper over medium heat until beef is browned and vegetables are softened. Drain excess grease.
  2. Add Garlic: Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Mix Sauce: Add ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  4. Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
  5. Serve: Serve hot on toasted hamburger buns.

Notes

  • Adjust sweetness: add more ketchup and sugar for sweet, more Worcestershire and mustard for tangy.
  • Make ahead: filling can be refrigerated up to 3 days or frozen for 3 months.
  • Great on slider buns for parties.
  • Serve with pickles, coleslaw, or potato chips for a classic diner-style meal.
