These homemade sloppy joes are sweet, tangy, and perfectly messy! A quick 30-minute dinner that’s a family favorite and way better than the canned mix.
Ingredients
Ground Beef Mixture:
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, diced (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for a kick)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Serving:
- 4–6 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Cook Ground Beef Mixture: In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and bell pepper over medium heat until beef is browned and vegetables are softened. Drain excess grease.
- Add Garlic: Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Mix Sauce: Add ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
- Serve: Serve hot on toasted hamburger buns.
Notes
- Adjust sweetness: add more ketchup and sugar for sweet, more Worcestershire and mustard for tangy.
- Make ahead: filling can be refrigerated up to 3 days or frozen for 3 months.
- Great on slider buns for parties.
