Description

Sopaipillas are fluffy, deep-fried pastries that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Traditionally served with honey or powdered sugar, they make a delightful sweet or savory snack, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons vegetable shortening or lard

3/4 cup warm water

Oil for frying

Honey or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine. Add the vegetable shortening or lard and blend using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 2-3 minutes until smooth.
  3. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  4. After resting, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles, each about 2-3 inches in size.
  5. In a deep skillet or pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat (around 350°F). Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure the oil is hot enough.
  6. Drop the dough pieces into the hot oil and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  7. Remove the sopaipillas with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with honey drizzled on top or dusted with powdered sugar.

Notes

  • For a sweet variation, toss the fried sopaipillas in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
  • For a savory twist, add shredded cheese into the dough or serve them with chili.
  • To make them gluten-free, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute butter for the shortening or lard.
