Description
Spanish Tomato Bread, or Pan con Tomate, is a simple and rustic Catalan appetizer featuring crisp toasted bread rubbed with ripe tomatoes, garlic, and drizzled with olive oil. This flavorful and easy-to-make dish captures the essence of Spanish tapas culture and is perfect as a starter or snack.
Ingredients
Bread
- 4 slices crusty bread (baguette or sourdough)
Tomato Topping
- 2 ripe tomatoes, halved
- 1 clove garlic, peeled
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Toast the bread: Toast the 4 slices of crusty bread until they become golden and crisp, either in a toaster or under a broiler for about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Rub garlic on bread: Take the peeled clove of garlic and rub it gently over one side of each toasted bread slice to impart a subtle garlic flavor.
- Apply tomato: Rub the cut sides of the halved ripe tomatoes over the garlic-rubbed surface, squeezing slightly as you rub so that the tomato juices and pulp soak into the bread.
- Add olive oil and salt: Drizzle each slice generously with 2 tablespoons of olive oil overall, then sprinkle lightly with salt to enhance the flavors.
- Serve immediately: Serve the Pan con Tomate right away as a fresh and flavorful appetizer or tapas dish.
Notes
- For added flavor, top each slice with a thin slice of serrano ham or an anchovy.
- Works great as an appetizer or tapas starter for gatherings.
- Use very ripe tomatoes for the best taste and juiciness.
- Adjust salt and olive oil quantities to your taste preference.
