Description
A crispy and indulgent Japanese tempura sushi roll featuring golden fried shrimp wrapped with seasoned sushi rice, fresh avocado, and cucumber, delivering a perfect balance of crunchy texture and fresh flavors.
Ingredients
Sushi Base
- 2 cups sushi rice, cooked
- 4 sheets nori
Tempura Shrimp
- 8 shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 cup tempura batter mix
- Cold water (as needed for batter)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil recommended)
Vegetables
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 1 cucumber, julienned
Instructions
- Prepare Tempura Batter: Combine the tempura batter mix with cold water according to package instructions to create a smooth, cold batter essential for achieving a crispy texture.
- Fry the Shrimp: Dip each peeled and deveined shrimp into the prepared batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C) and fry the battered shrimp until they turn golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Prepare the Sushi Base: Place one sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi rolling mat. Evenly spread a thin layer of the cooked sushi rice over the nori, leaving a small margin at the top edge to seal the roll.
- Add Fillings: Arrange the tempura shrimp, sliced avocado, and julienned cucumber in a line along the bottom edge of the rice-covered nori sheet, preparing for rolling.
- Roll the Sushi: Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly from the bottom edge upward, applying gentle pressure to ensure a firm roll. Seal the edge with a little water if necessary.
- Slice and Serve: Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve immediately with soy sauce or your preferred dipping sauce to enjoy the crisp texture and fresh flavors.
Notes
- Keep the tempura batter cold to ensure maximum crispiness when frying.
- Serve the sushi rolls fresh to maintain the best texture and flavor.
- Use a sharp knife dipped in water when slicing to prevent rice from sticking.
- Vegetable oil with a high smoke point is recommended for frying tempura shrimp.
