Ingredients
Biscuit Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
- ¾ cup cold milk or buttermilk
Butter Topping (Optional)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper until well combined.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry mixture and use a pastry cutter or fork to cut it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces of butter.
- Add Cheese and Herbs: Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese, chopped fresh parsley, and chopped chives evenly throughout the mixture.
- Add Milk: Pour in the cold milk or buttermilk and gently mix with a spatula or spoon just until the dough begins to come together. Avoid overmixing to keep biscuits tender.
- Shape Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle, being careful not to overwork the dough.
- Cut Biscuits: Use a round biscuit cutter or a sharp knife to cut the dough into 8 biscuits. Place the biscuits onto the prepared baking sheet so their sides touch for softer edges.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the biscuits turn golden brown on top.
- Apply Butter Topping: If desired, brush the warm biscuits with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and chopped parsley for extra flavor and shine.
- Serve Warm: Serve the biscuits immediately while warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Do not overmix the dough to keep biscuits fluffy and tender.
- Always use cold butter and cold milk to ensure biscuits rise properly.
- If fresh herbs aren’t available, substitute with dried herbs at one-third of the amount.
- Best served warm; leftovers can be stored and consumed within 2 days.
