Description

Asian Cabbage Rolls are tender cabbage leaves filled with a savory mixture of ground meat, rice, garlic, ginger, and Asian-inspired seasonings. Simmered in a flavorful sauce until tender, these rolls make a comforting and delicious family dinner perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Cabbage Rolls

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground pork or ground chicken
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, finely sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Sauce

  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger

Instructions

  1. Blanch Cabbage Leaves: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer cabbage leaves and blanch them in the boiling water for 1–2 minutes until softened. Transfer the blanched leaves to cold water to stop cooking and then drain them well.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a large bowl, combine the ground pork or chicken, cooked white rice, minced garlic, grated ginger, finely sliced green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, egg, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly combined.
  3. Assemble Rolls: Place about 2–3 tablespoons of the prepared filling in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold the sides of the leaf inward and roll tightly to form a neat cabbage roll, ensuring that the filling is securely enclosed.
  4. Arrange Rolls: Place each cabbage roll seam-side down in a large skillet or a suitable baking dish in a single layer for even cooking.
  5. Make Sauce: Whisk together the chicken broth, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger until well combined to create the savory sauce.
  6. Cook Rolls: Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the arranged cabbage rolls. Cover the skillet or baking dish tightly with a lid or foil. Simmer on the stovetop over medium-low heat for 30–35 minutes, or alternatively bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 40 minutes, until the filling is fully cooked and tender.
  7. Serve: Once cooked, spoon some of the flavorful sauce over the cabbage rolls before serving. Garnish with extra sliced green onions if desired.

Notes

  • Napa cabbage can be substituted for green cabbage to create softer, more delicate rolls.
  • You can swap ground pork with ground chicken, turkey, or beef depending on preference.
  • Ensure the internal temperature of the filling reaches 165°F (74°C) for poultry or 160°F (71°C) for ground pork or beef to guarantee safe consumption.
  • For added nutrition and texture, include shredded carrots or mushrooms in the filling mixture.
  • Serve these cabbage rolls alongside steamed rice and garnish with additional green onions for a more complete meal.
