Description

A flavorful Japanese-style rice bowl topped with tender beef and a fragrant shiso garlic soy sauce—simple yet packed with umami, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Beef Donburi Ingredients

  • 300g thinly sliced beef
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Fresh shiso leaves (chopped)
  • 1/2 onion (sliced)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil and sauté garlic: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  2. Cook onion: Add the sliced half onion to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Brown the beef: Add the thinly sliced beef to the pan and cook until browned all over, about 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently to ensure even cooking.
  4. Add seasoning: Stir in 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon mirin, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Mix well to combine all flavors.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat and simmer the beef mixture for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and coat the beef nicely.
  6. Serve: Spoon the cooked beef and sauce over 2 cups of warm cooked rice. Garnish generously with chopped fresh shiso leaves before serving.

Notes

  • If fresh shiso leaves are unavailable, substitute with fresh basil for a different herbal note.
  • For extra richness and protein, add a soft-cooked or poached egg on top of the donburi bowl.
