Description

This Gluten Free Beef Lo Mein is a quick and flavorful noodle dish made with tender slices of beef, gluten-free noodles, and vibrant vegetables tossed in a savory homemade sauce. Perfect for a weeknight dinner, this recipe delivers an easy takeout-style meal you can prepare in under 30 minutes using simple stovetop stir-frying techniques.

Ingredients

Beef and Vegetables

  • 1 lb (450 g) flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz (225 g) gluten-free lo mein or rice noodles
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup gluten-free tamari
  • 2 tablespoons gluten-free hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook Noodles: Cook the gluten-free noodles according to the package directions, then drain and rinse briefly under cold water to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together tamari, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, grated fresh ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using), to make a flavorful sauce.
  3. Brown Beef: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the thinly sliced beef and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove beef from skillet and set aside.
  4. Cook Vegetables: Add sesame oil to the same skillet, then add bell pepper, shredded carrots, and broccoli florets. Stir-fry for 4 to 5 minutes until vegetables are crisp-tender.
  5. Add Garlic: Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Combine Ingredients: Return the browned beef to the skillet along with the cooked noodles.
  7. Add Sauce and Toss: Pour the prepared sauce over the beef, noodles, and vegetables. Toss everything together and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until heated through and evenly coated with sauce.
  8. Finish and Serve: Stir in sliced green onions, then remove from heat and serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use certified gluten-free noodles and sauces to ensure the dish remains gluten-free.
  • Flank steak can be substituted with sirloin or thinly sliced chicken breast for variation.
  • Add mushrooms, snap peas, or cabbage to increase vegetable variety and nutrition.
  • For the most tender beef, slice the meat thinly against the grain.
