Ingredients
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Casserole
- 2 (14.5-ounce) cans green beans, drained
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
- ½ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 cup French fried onions
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Cook Beef and Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is softened, stirring occasionally to break up the meat.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, then drain any excess grease from the skillet to reduce fat content.
- Mix Soup Sauce: In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, salt, and pepper to create a creamy and flavorful sauce base.
- Combine Ingredients: Stir the cooked beef mixture, drained green beans, and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese into the soup sauce until everything is evenly coated.
- Assemble Casserole: Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly for consistent cooking.
- Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top to create a cheesy crust.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes to allow flavors to meld and cheese to melt.
- Top with Fried Onions: Remove from oven and sprinkle French fried onions on top to add crunchy texture and flavor.
- Bake Again: Return casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5–10 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the onions have turned golden brown.
- Rest and Serve: Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before serving to allow it to set and make it easier to portion.
Notes
- Fresh or frozen green beans can be substituted for canned green beans for a fresher taste.
- For extra flavor, add cooked bacon pieces or sautéed mushrooms to the beef mixture before combining.
- Monterey Jack or Colby cheese works well as alternatives to cheddar for different cheese flavor profiles.
