Description
Hamburger Steak is a comforting Southern classic featuring seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich, savory onion and mushroom gravy. This hearty and flavorful meal pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered vegetables, making it an ideal choice for a satisfying family dinner.
Ingredients
Hamburger Steaks
- 1½ lbs ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Onion Gravy
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until evenly combined.
- Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are evenly sized for uniform cooking.
- Brown the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brown the patties for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until they develop a rich, golden crust. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms and sauté until they are softened and beginning to caramelize, about 5-7 minutes.
- Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring constantly for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce until the gravy is smooth and begins to thicken.
- Simmer the Patties: Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 15 minutes to cook the patties through and meld flavors.
- Serve: Garnish the hamburger steaks and gravy with fresh parsley. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered vegetables for a complete meal.
