Description

Hamburger Steak and Gravy is a comforting Southern-style dinner featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. Served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, it’s an easy and satisfying homemade meal perfect for a hearty weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
  • ½ small onion, finely diced
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Form into 4–6 oval patties to ensure even cooking.
  2. Brown the steaks: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, until they develop a nice brown crust. Transfer the patties to a plate to rest temporarily.
  3. Cook the vegetables: Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the skillet. Add the sliced onion and mushrooms and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release its aroma.
  4. Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked vegetables in the skillet and stir continuously for 1 minute to cook off the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the beef broth to prevent lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and dried thyme for depth of flavor.
  5. Simmer the steaks: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer gently for 10–15 minutes until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened to your liking.
  6. Season and serve: Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper as needed. Spoon the rich gravy over the hamburger steaks and serve immediately over your choice of mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the ground beef mixture or the patties may become tough.
  • Use 80–85% lean ground beef for juicy hamburger steaks.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of beef broth to thin it out.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes, white rice, egg noodles, or cauliflower mash for variety.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
