Description
A hearty and comforting Italian-inspired stew featuring savory Italian sausage, tender white beans, and a rich tomato and chicken broth. This rustic dish is perfect for a cozy dinner, combining bold flavors with wholesome ingredients in a simple stovetop preparation.
Ingredients
Meat
- 250 g Italian sausage (sliced or crumbled)
Beans & Vegetables
- 1 can white beans (drained and rinsed)
- 1 small onion (chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- Optional: spinach or kale
Liquids & Sauces
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1/2 cup crushed tomatoes
Seasonings & Oils
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Brown the Sausage: Heat olive oil in a pot over medium heat, then add the Italian sausage. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sausage is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Sauté Aromatics: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the sausage. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the onion is translucent and softened, approximately 3-4 minutes.
- Add Tomatoes and Beans: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, drained white beans, and chicken broth. Mix well to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Season the Stew: Add Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir to distribute the seasonings thoroughly throughout the stew.
- Simmer the Stew: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and allow the stew to simmer gently for 15-20 minutes to let the flavors meld and the broth to thicken slightly.
- Add Greens (Optional): If using spinach or kale, stir them into the stew during the last 5 minutes of cooking, letting the greens wilt down and incorporate with the flavors.
- Serve: Once the greens are wilted and the stew has thickened to your liking, remove from heat and serve the stew hot, optionally accompanied by crusty bread.
Notes
- Use spicy Italian sausage if you prefer a heat kick in the stew.
- This stew pairs wonderfully with crusty bread to soak up the flavorful broth.
- You can substitute kale or spinach based on your preference or availability.
- Adjust salt and pepper to taste depending on the saltiness of your broth and sausage.
