Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it stand for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Add egg and butter: Mix in the large egg and softened unsalted butter into the foamy yeast mixture until well combined.
- Incorporate flour and salt: Gradually add the all-purpose flour and salt to the wet ingredients, stirring continuously until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, ensuring proper gluten development.
- First rise: Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release air bubbles and shape it into a loaf form.
- Second rise: Transfer the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan and allow it to rise again for 30 minutes until it puffs up noticeably.
- Bake the bread: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaf for 30–35 minutes until the crust turns golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool and serve: Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour for a chewier texture.
- Brush the top of the bread with melted butter after baking to achieve a softer crust.
- Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
