Description

A hearty Southern-style casserole featuring five delicious layers of seasoned ground beef, vegetables, potatoes, cheese, and a creamy sauce. This comforting and satisfying dish is perfect for family dinners and potlucks, delivering rich flavors and a creamy, cheesy finish that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Beef and Seasoning

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Vegetables and Layers

  • 2 cups sliced potatoes
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables

Sauce and Cheese

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 190°C (375°F) to prepare it for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook the beef mixture: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef along with the diced onion until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat. Season the mixture with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper, stirring well to combine.
  3. Prepare the baking dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
  4. Layer the casserole: Arrange the sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom of the baking dish. Next, spread the seasoned beef mixture over the potatoes. Follow with a layer of frozen mixed vegetables. In a separate bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup with the milk, then pour this creamy sauce evenly over the vegetable layer. Finally, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  5. Bake covered: Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 45 minutes to allow the layers to cook through and meld flavors.
  6. Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese topping is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Rest before serving: Let the casserole stand for 10 minutes after baking to settle and cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Thinly slicing the potatoes helps them cook evenly through the bake.
  • You can substitute cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom if preferred.
  • Leftovers keep well when refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated for another meal.
